The Plateau Municipal Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (PLAMWASSA), under the Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (SURWASH) Programme, has conducted a two-day capacity-building training for members of School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) and Ward Development Committees (WDCs) on the operation and maintenance of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities.
The training, which commenced on 29th September and ended on 30th September, 2026, was aimed at equipping participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to effectively operate, maintain and sustain WASH facilities in schools and communities.
In his welcome address, Engr. Aaron Goyit welcomed the participants and facilitators to the training and emphasized the importance of building the capacity of SBMC and WDC members to ensure the proper management and sustainability of WASH facilities.
He noted that effective operation and maintenance of WASH facilities requires collective responsibility, urging participants to apply the knowledge gained during the training in their respective schools and communities.
The training covered key areas, including proper operation and routine maintenance of WASH facilities, ownership and accountability, identification of common challenges affecting WASH infrastructure, and measures for ensuring that facilities remain functional and sustainable.
The facilitators, Mrs Regina Magit, Engr. Aaron Goyit, Mr. Barnabas Choji, Sanitarian Kangyang Timothy, and Mr. Samson Bangson took participants through various sessions, providing practical guidance on effective WASH facility management and maintenance.
The facilitators stressed the need for regular inspection, timely repairs, proper use of facilities and community ownership to prevent WASH facilities from becoming dysfunctional.
Participants also had the opportunity to share experiences, discuss challenges affecting the sustainability of WASH facilities and identify practical solutions to improve their management.
The training forms part of ongoing efforts by PLAMWASSA and SURWASH to strengthen institutional and community capacity, promote ownership and accountability, and ensure the sustainability of WASH facilities in schools and communities.
As part of efforts to strengthen effective WASH service delivery, PLAMWASSA also distributed working materials, including laptops and printers, to the WASH departments in the five implementing Local Government Areas of Bokkos, Mangu, Wase, Langtang North and Jos South. The equipment is expected to enhance the departments’ capacity for effective data management, documentation, reporting and other WASH-related activities.
