To halt the spread of deadly waterborne diseases, the Plateau Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (PRUWASSA) has launched its fourth phase of sanitation support delivering vital toilet building materials to 170 households across rural communities in Langtang North Local Government Area.
Driven by the Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (SURWASH) Programme, the relief initiative is to subsidize construction costs to accelerate the region's push toward total sanitation.
Speaking at the ceremony, the General Manager of PRUWASSA, Engr. Godfrey Nuhu Dashuhar emphasized the agency's core mission to drive sanitation and hygiene across the state. Under the SURWASH protocol, he explained that the subsidy targets vulnerable community members, specifically assisting those who have already shown commitment by digging soak pits and constructing the substructure, while the newly provided materials will cover essential finishing touches, including flooring, roofing, and doors.
Dashuhar added that the effort is designed to curb public and environmental health risks, particularly waterborne diseases like cholera that frequently threaten rural communities and young children, and called on residents to actively partner with the agency to eliminate open defecation entirely.
Representing the Chairman of Langtang North Local Government Council, the Deputy Chairman, Hon. Deborah Dalen MN expressed gratitude to the PRUWASSA team. She pledged sustained local support and assured that an active budget line would be maintained for its WASH department to effectively combat water-related health crises.
Adding to the strategic vision of the initiative, Nde Philip Gompang, the chairman of the Plateau State Task Group on Sanitation (STGS) highlighted the necessity of thorough documentation throughout the process. Proper tracking, he noted, is vital for future evaluations and monitoring progress.
He urged community members to treat the distribution with urgency as the state pushes toward achieving Open Defecation Free (ODF) status ahead of the November 2026 deadline.
Response from the local community was overwhelmingly positive. Beneficiaries expressed deep gratitude for the support and pledged to begin installation right away, while households that had not yet completed their initial structures promised to commence construction immediately to benefit from the initiative.
