JWSC TRAINS STAFF ON STORE MANAGEMENT AND RISK RESILIENCE

The Jos Water Services Corporation (JWSC) has trained 40 members of its finance, audit and management teams on store management and risk resilience as part of Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (SURWASH) programme, to improve resource control and prepare staff to handle operational challenges.
The two-day workshop was held at Three Angels City Apartment and Suites, Fwavei Rayfield, Jos, and the training was designed to strengthen the capacity of staff in effective store management practices, accountability, internal controls, and risk management. It also aimed to equip participants with practical knowledge to improve operational efficiency and enhance the corporation's ability to identify and manage potential risk.
The initiative underscores the commitment of Performance Improvement Action Plan (PIAP) and Jos Water Services Corporation (JWSC) to building institutional capacity and promoting stronger management systems. The training is expected to contributeto improved service delivery and more effective management of the corporation's resources.
Declaring the workshop open, the Managing Director of JWSC, Engr. Apollos S. Samchi, said effective management of stores and resources was essential to the corporation’s operations and staff needs the right skills to manage resources efficiently and identify risks that could affect the corporation’s activities.
“In today’s fast-paced environment, it is imperative that our staff are equipped with the skills necessary to manage resources efficiently and mitigate risks,” Samchi said.
The first day focused on Store Management, with participants learning about inventory control, stock management and the financial consequences of poor inventory practices.
The facilitator, Dr. Anthony Musa Garba, used interactive sessions and practical case studies to explain how proper stock control can reduce waste, improve accountability and support efficient operations.
Participants also discussed inventory turnover, cost control and the use of technology to improve store management.
A participant Henry Longzem said the session provided useful knowledge on how technology could be applied to make inventory processes more efficient.
The second day focused on Risk and Resilience Management, where participants were introduced to risk assessment methods and ways of preparing for unexpected situations that could disrupt operations.
Through simulated scenarios and group activities, the participants were given opportunities to assess risks and develop possible responses to them.
The Executive Director, Administration and Finance, Mr. Emmanuel Agwo said risk management should be incorporated into the daily activities of the corporation rather than treated only as a response to problems, adding that Risk management is not just about avoiding pitfalls; it’s about preparing for uncertainties.
The workshop ended with a feedback session, with participants highlighting the practical nature of the training and calling for similar programmes to be held regularly and to also strengthen staff capacity in inventory management, financial control and risk assessment as JWSC continues its day-to-day operations.
